Upcycle Desk Chair

Over the weekend I decided to take apart an old desk chair that belonged to my oldest brother. I’ve been wanting different items to use as props for photo sessions and this one was cheap to upcycle. By cheap, I mean it cost me a whopping total of $7 for paint. That’s it!

The chair started out like this. Very run down after about 30+ years of use. The seat is a tweed type fabric and covered in spots as well as cat hair. Ick!

Lucky for me, my dad owns numerous sanders, so my first step after unscrewing the seat was to sand it down and get all of the lacquer (which was a big pain in the butt). I started off with 220 grit sandpaper which was no where near rough enough to cut through all of it. So I kicked it down to 60. Honestly, I was a big nervous about the 60 grit sandpaper but it made it so much easier to get all the lacquer off.

See? Nasty!!! Well I guess it’s not that nasty. Ha Ha

Next, I had dad hook it up with some wood glue since it was not wanting to stay together. Well, since ever! Thing was wanting to fall apart for the longest time.

Painting TIME!!!! I chose a pretty Garnet Satin from Valspar. You can find this paint at your local Lowe’s store. I highly recommend Valspar paint. I had hubby spray it down because I’ve never spray painted anything and I’m way too much of a perfectionist and didn’t want to have drips all over it.

What can I say? I wasn’t born to paint. ha ha!

Step 7 & 8  is basically my dad, hubby & I recovering the seat. I used khaki duck cloth fabric that the hubby had planned on using in his car and then changed his mind. Mom stepped in and had a random piece of foam sitting around so we used that to make the stiff chair comfy. A few (20 or so) staples later and bam! Seat recovered!

Screwed the seat on after the paint fully dried and bam! Done! Isn’t it pretty? I love that it doesn’t look super brand new. It has a nice look to it and I think it will look great in photo sessions.

Oh and check out this awesome throw blanket I got yesterday at Target! It was on clearance for $5.98! Total score! I had wanted a blanket to use for photo sessions that looked great and this caught my eye. I actually saw it on Instagram thanks to a coupon lady I follow. Note* I won’t be using the blanket with the chair since the “reds” don’t match.
